This is an interesting short story. Bunting manages to do a fairly good job of developing the plot and characters in just fifteen pages. As the story opens, Jim is an aging musician who plays for senior citizens in a nursing home. The somber mood is set. Jim has lost his true love, several years ago. His son is grown and living away from home. Jim's memories and music are the only connections that keep him alive.The setting switches to a restaurant where Jim has dinner with his best friend, his son, and fiancee. There is a brief discussion about politics that in some ways disrupts the main plot. Nevertheless, the author succeeds in writing a deep, thought-provoking piece filled with metaphors and interesting life scenarios.
Recommended for young adult and adult audiences.

This is an alright short story. The author writes well and tells a good story. For me, it didn’t hit all the notes. But it might for other readers.
This short story reads like jazz sounds...loud, then soft and smooth, like the story of life in song. It mourns. It jiggles. It spikes high and winds down softly. Brilliant. Loved it. Play another one, Joe Bunting.
This short story is genius. Evocative, stunning prose. I don't know how I came across this author, but I am so glad I did.
More stories like this, please! Until there are more, I'm going to reread HANDS. Right now.
Joe Bunting is the first young writer to truly impress me in years. This "short" story has the depth and power of a full-length novel, weaving its unique tale masterfully from start to finish. At a time when the market is flooded with the graceless ramblings of deluded novices, Joe's work is mature, meticulous and spellbinding. He's probably a natural wordsmith, but this story has that extra something that tells you the author works hard at his craft, and has learned how to use his words as precisely and effectively as all true craftsmen use the tools of their trades. Read him now, so that you can brag about it later when he's at the top of the New York Times best seller list!
An old jazz musician reflects on the key relationships of his life. Music is always present in the story which gives it a certain elegance and sophistication (are they not characteristics one associates with jazz?).
He expresses sadness as a father and the grief of losing and missing the woman who held his heart in her hands. The struggle of not feeling like he achieved enough as a muso.
It's understated story but one that touches the drama in all of us.
My only suggestion would be focus on only the one relationship as I felt each one was all too fleeting which frustrated me a little, the story being only 15 pages long.
A quick read and at $2.99 a worthwhile investment.
Joe uses incredible imagery and filled this story with many wonderful metaphors that kept me completely in the mind of the narrator, Jimmy. The heart of the story and the lesson Jimmy wants everyone to know was a complete surprise, but tied in jazz and authentic living beautifully. It starts out slow but the imagery is so compelling that you will stick around gladly for the moral of the story, and you will be glad you did. Great story.
In a world where writing has become overly factual and even somewhat critical it is nice to read something that read a story that is open for interpretation. The writer isn't telling you what to think he is letting you figure it out for yourself. What is racism? What does it mean to grow old? Are people simply products of the environment they live in or are they capable of changing their environment? Or should it just be about politics and not about race? Thanks for sharing this story Mr. Bunting it was great to imagine. I can see you closing your eyes and typing at the computer and looking down and seeing something that just came out of you, just like Robbie sitting at the piano.
